PARKING GARAGE

"Life is...

...Doing the laundry."

I don't have my own washing machine at home, so I have to take my dirty laundry to a laundromat. I wasn't really happy with this situation at first, but now I'm used to it. It's a great reason to get out of the house and I can combine it with my daily walks.

The laundromat is actually kind of old-fashioned. You can't pay by card for instance. First, you have to get a token and washing powder at one machine hanging on the wall, that doesn't even work properly half the time, and it only takes coins. So you always have to remember to bring along cash. It's probably the only thing I still use cash for in my daily life right now. Everything is digital in 2021.

When you've put in the right amount, a token and some washing powder will come out that you have to use for the washing machine itself. After loading up the machine and starting it, I have to kill some time. It's usually around 30 minutes. And that's a time you really can't do very much. So usually I visit some stores in the area and see if I can buy something small I don't need, but now with the coronavirus, this time is spent doing almost nothing. And doing nothing is something that I find really hard.

I knew about this underground parking garage around the corner. I haven't been there too often yet so I thought I'd take a look since I really didn't have anything better to do, and my guess was that I could maybe take a nice picture there.

When taking these pictures for my blog, I've started to look out for places where I can focus on the perspective. This place was a great spot to practice this, because of the straight lines on the concrete and on the ceiling.

The majority of our lives we spend doing little chores or other mundane things in private, like doing the laundry for example. They don't necessarily feel special, but they can be. You're alive, and that is already an amazing thing. Social media can make us sometimes feel that we constantly have to do all these fun, great, extreme things, but life isn't always like that. And I guess that's the point I'm trying to make here. So that's why life is sometimes just something boring like doing the laundry.
